Describing People and Objects

When you are describing something—a person, an object, a place—it is important to remember that you are not describing it to yourself but to someone else. You therefore have to be clear in your own mind as to what is fact, i.e. the colour of hair or eyes, the size of a box, a variety of plant, etc. and what is your personal impression, i.e. your own feelings or reaction to something, somebody, or some experience. Fact and personal impression form part of a description. Description requires a careful choice of words.
